Vernazza

Vernazza, Emerging Pastel Artist
Vernazza
The is the small town of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre region of northwestern Italy. Most of the town is crowded onto this small promontory jutting into the Ligurian Sea and guarded by the fortress of the Castello Doria, built to protect the town from pirates. Because there is so much potential detail, I tried to suppress some of them (e.g. many of the buildings have no windows) to make the composition simpler. I used a pastel underpainting washed with isopropyl alcohol under part of the painting and a watercolor underpainting under the buildings. I used the pastel to create textures and stronger contrasts.
