While walking on a back road of one of the beautiful, thoroughbred farms in our area, I was inspired to create this pastel painting showing the striking contrasts between the silhouetted trees and the brilliant sunlit areas. Working on brown craft paper mounted to foam core board, I quickly laid out a rough composition using vine charcoal. Establishing the highs & lows first, I laid in the dark trunks of the trees & the blue skies & bright green trees of the background with soft pastel. I worked from top to bottom & fixed the painting with Lascaux fixative before framing it behind museum glass.
